Melissa Parker

Shell Knob School has a new Middle School English Language Arts teacher and Librarian, Mrs. Melissa Parker.

Mrs. Parker answered some questions to help us get to know her better.

How long have you been in education? I've been a Communication Arts teacher for 15 years. I taught at Aurora and Blue Eye before coming to Shell Knob.

Why did you choose education? I became a teacher after volunteering and substitute teaching in the Aurora schools for 7 years; I fell in love with the hope we have in schools: each new day gives us the chance to do our best job with and for our kids.

What is your highest degree? I have a BS in Civil Engineering, which I realize doesn't correlate to teaching Communication Arts. I worked in that field for several years, was a stay-at-home Mom for several years, and then began subbing. When I went to earn my teaching certificate, I knew it made sense to become a math or science teacher, but I've always enjoyed reading and writing, so I chose that area. It was a good choice, because I love helping kids find joy in a good story.

What was your favorite subject in school? I actually enjoyed finding the value of X in Algebra!

What is your favorite way to spend your free time? On the lake with my family.

Do you have any pets? We have a Havachon named Harley.

Do you have any hobbies? My favorite hobbies are lake related: fishing, skiing, surfing, boating, etc
