Gaga Ball

Recently, Shell Knob School Athletic Director Jeremey Land purchased a Gaga Ball pit for the students.  What is Gaga Ball you ask?  It is a friendlier version of dodgeball played in an octagonal pit.  The origin of Gaga Ball is slightly contested, however it is largely attributed to beginning in Israel in the 1950's.  It is reported that Israeli counselors introduced Gaga Ball in America in Jewish camps.  It quickly became part of camp culture. Gaga in Hebrew translates to "Hit-Hit" or "touch-Touch.  And that describes the game precisely, hit and touch the ball!

Students and Staff alike love the new game.  It is the most popular activity at recess and on our recent beautiful weather days, you will find the PE classes in the pit. Gaga Ball has specific rules such as hit the ball, but do not toss the ball or scoop the ball.  If the player is hit on or below the knee, they are out.  No hitting the ball out of the pit and using the pit to aid in jumping. Players cannot hit the ball twice. So,the short of it is, there is a loose ball that you want to avoid and at the same time you want to hit towards other players' lower legs.  It does take strategy, jumping and quickness.  It does not take specific skills like other sports.  It is often referred to as the "great equalizer."  It is fast paced and fun for everyone and SKS is sure enjoying it!
